EPA 4C: Partial Edentulous Removable Partial Dentures (RPD) Design

Design Neatness

• Lines neat and well defined, Clean casts/models
• Clear tripod markings
• Appropriate colors used based on color key

• Minor inconsistencies in colors used or lines drawn that do not affect design usage
• Incorrect color usage with no accompanying key, but appropriately designed

• Casts/models are untidy

• Grossly ill-defined lines or untidy casts that make the design unusable
• Failure to tripod casts/models

Major Connector

• Correctly drawn with appropriate dimensions, location and extension with respect to gingival margins, floor of the mouth, palate, tori and tissue undercuts

• Minor deviations from ideal dimensions/ location/ extension
• Minor deviations from ideal design on Palate
• Minor impingement on gingival margins/ along floor of mouth/ tori / tissue undercuts

• Major deviations along a short area from ideal dimensions/ location and extension, but the design is usable.
• Major impingement along a short area on palate/ gingival margins/ floor of mouth/ tori / tissue undercuts but the design is usable
• Missing finish line

• No major connector drawn
• Incorrect choice of major connector
• Gross design errors making major connector unusable

Minor Connector

• Correctly drawn with appropriate dimensions, location and extension with respect to the teeth, edentulous ridge and other components of RPD

• Minor deviations from ideal dimensions, location and extent

• Major deviations from ideal dimension, location and extent, but the design is usable
• Unnecessary connectors present that do not compromise the design
• Missing components such as tissue stops, gingival feet, physical retainer (meshwork)

• No minor connectors drawn
• Gross design errors making minor connectors unusable

Clasp Design

• Appropriate choice of clasp based on Kennedy Classification
• All components of clasp assembly drawn with appropriate dimensions, location and extension on abutment teeth with appropriate tooth modifications specified
• Tooth undercut location marked and depth specified.
• Soft tissue undercuts marked for infra-bulge clasps

• Choice of clasp or design not ideal but would not harm the tooth or tissue
• Clasp design extends onto areas of tooth that need minor modifications that are not specified

• Clasp design extends onto areas of tooth that need major modifications that are not specified
• Clasp design missing reciprocal or rest components
• Clasp retentive element placed in undercut depths with slight deviation from ideal

• Missing clasp assembly or inappropriate choice of clasp based on Kennedy classification
